At Orphie, we have developed our own measurement standard, Normphie, to ensure and objectively demonstrate our performance. Thanks to this standard, we prove that our cameras can see up to 1.8 times farther and in waters up to twice as turbid as a standard camera.
A protocol certified by Bureau Veritas
To ensure measured and verifiable performance, we have developed a dedicated testing protocol for turbid waters, validated by Burea Veritas, an organization renowned for its strict certification standards.
The tests were carried out in tanks in Nantes, with controlled turbidity from 0.3 to 16 NTU. Only distances greater than 0.5 m between the test chart and the camera were considered, to reflect real operating conditions.
Image quality was assessed using a black-and-white test chart. When the contrast fell below the 10% threshold, the measurement was discarded, so that only truly usable viewing distances were kept.
The Normphie curve Visibility vs Turbidity
The Normphie curve shows, for each turbidity level (in NTU), how far a standard camera and an Orphie camera can still deliver a usable image.
On the chart, turbidity is shown on the horizontal axis and viewing distance on the vertical axis: the higher the curve, the farther the camera can see for a given turbidity level. The gap between the Orphie curve and the standard curve immediately highlights the visibility gain provided by Orphie.
For example, at a turbidity level of 8 NTU, a standard camera can provide a usable image up to 0.5 meters, while the Orphie camera keeps a usable image up to 1 meter.

On images shared by a client in very turbid water, the difference is striking: the image from a standard camera is blurred, with very limited visibility, while the Orphie camera reveals a sharper scene, with more details and better color rendering.
